Under Law 4/2016, of 22 July, on the Protection of Companion Animals in the Community of Madrid, dogs, cats, ferrets and rabbits must be implanted with an identification microchip and must be sterilised prior to their release as adopted animals. Dogs are also obliged to have the current year's rabies vaccination in force.

All members of the family must agree to the adoption of the animal, as it involves many responsibilities in terms of care and attention: feeding, walks, visits to the vet, etc. Responsible pet ownership entails a series of fixed costs that must be considered (food, visits to the vet for routine health checks, accessories, etc.), as well as extra costs that may arise (surgeries, medication, holiday kennels, training, etc.).

Once you have decided on an adoption, you should make an appointment at the C.I.P.A. (Telf. 91 664 84 35) to see the animals. Our staff will advise you on which dog, cat, etc. would be most suitable for your family.

It is recommended that all the people who are going to live with the animal attend the appointment, so that you can see how it interacts with each member of the family, especially with the children.

Each animal has its own personality. Even if it belongs to a certain breed, it may not follow the established character patterns of that breed.

- When choosing between a puppy and an adult animal, it is important to consider that a puppy requires more time to feed, watch, teach and socialise properly. It is important to be patient because it will cause damage and mess up the house until it learns the basic rules. Adult dogs are generally calmer and if they have been properly socialised, they can adapt perfectly to your home.

Puppies are not recommended for older people because of their high energy and need for exercise and play.

- When you already have other pets at home, it is important to check the compatibility of coexistence between them and the new animal you wish to adopt. Our staff will be happy to advise you on this.

When a dog or cat is adopted, it is sterilised. Not only because this is stipulated by the current Law 4/2016, of 22 July, on the Protection of Companion Animals of the Community of Madrid, but also because it has multiple advantages for the physical and mental health of our pet.

Neutering an animal does not traumatise it, nor does it harm its general health. Furthermore, the animal does not need to put on weight if its diet is monitored. The problem of being overweight is usually caused by an inadequate lifestyle: excessive food and too little exercise.

The neutered animal tends to become calmer, less prone to fighting (and therefore less likely to be injured as a result) and also less likely to run away (reducing the risk of being run over or causing a traffic accident).

Early neutering of males reduces urinary elimination behaviour (territory marking).

Females are no longer in heat, thus avoiding the continuous attraction of males and the possibility that she may become pregnant if she escapes during this period. Psychological pregnancies are also prevented.

Castration reduces the risk of ovarian, uterine and breast tumours as well as uterine infections in bitches, and testicular and perianal gland tumours in males.

In addition, there are no unwanted litters, which entail the financial expense of maintenance and the need to find suitable and responsible owners for each of the animals in the new litter, as well as the need to provide the necessary care for both the mother and the puppies.

Any dog that has lived through a process of abandonment, each with its own history, has suffered a period of stress that may have been more or less long (more or less acute or chronic). Not in vain, any change produces stress, even if we are moving to a better situation.

For this reason, in the first days, weeks or months after adoption, we may find that the animal does not show its true personality because it is stressed, and we can observe two different profiles:

The hyperactive or problem dog: linked to an excess of energy produced by stress. In this case we must act with a lot of patience and love. The stress and all that it entails will slowly diminish. No attempt should be made to repress, punish, eliminate or modify these behaviours, because they serve to relieve the dog's stress; nor is it a good idea to educate during this period of adaptation. What the animal basically needs during the first few months is: peace, quiet, good food, to feel loved, to receive affection, to feel secure and to rest.

The perfect dog: A dog that suffers from chronic stress is one that has been suffering from stress for a long time and, as a result, has exhausted its energy. This circumstance means that we have an animal that appears to be very calm, that does not bark, that does not bother, that does not cause any problems. After being adopted, with the improvement in its wellbeing, the dog overcomes the first period of recovery from chronic stress, and then we have a dog like the one in point 1: hyperactive. It is advisable to be forewarned about this and not to be frightened by this change, because it is a process of adaptation and we simply have to be patient and wait for this second stage to end so that the dog can balance itself emotionally.

A newly adopted dog requires a period of adaptation to the new situation until it is stabilised. This period varies from one individual to another depending on factors such as age, state of health and, above all, emotional state.

In that sense, there are several tips that can help to cope with the adaptation period with less stress for the animal:

1. Patience: we must be aware that it is a living being with its own decisions and thoughts, and that it will need time to adapt to its new home, owners, etc. Both puppies and many of the adult dogs that are up for adoption are not usually educated to live in a home (for example, they do not know not to urinate in the house, steal food from the table or bark when the doorbell rings), but all dogs can be educated with time and patience.
2. Short walks: at the beginning we should go for short walks, 10-15 minutes, but frequent (5 or 6 a day). In this way we will avoid overexciting the newcomer dog with a lot of information all at once, as well as making it easier for him to do his needs outside the house, encouraging him to get used to the area and to be able to sniff everything well.
3. Gradual absences: In the first days it is advisable not to leave the newly adopted dog alone for a long time. Before leaving him alone, it is advisable to give him a relaxing walk and provide him with entertainment. We must teach him, little by little, to be left alone. To do this, we will start with outings of a couple of minutes, which we will increase progressively to five, seven, five, ten, fifteen minutes, etc.
4. Routine: it is essential to maintain a routine and order in our dog's daily life, in order to favour a good education and achieve a state of calm and serenity for the animal.
5. Security and demands: it is important to set rules for coexistence from the beginning, but this does not mean that we can scold the dog. Initially, it is best not to make demands of the dog, but to show him that his new family group is trustworthy, reliable and predictable. And reward his positive actions. If he makes mistakes in the first few weeks, it will be our fault, as we have not taught him to do so. The best thing in these cases is prevention: for example, if we do not want him to go into the rooms, we will not let him in from the beginning. Furthermore, handling should be progressive: not all dogs like to be petted, especially if they do not know us well enough yet. We will gradually learn what he likes and what he does not like, respecting his space and not disturbing him while he sleeps or eats.
6. Play: the newly adopted dog needs calm games (mental stimulation: searching for food or Kong-type toys; chewing bones).
7. Demands for attention: it is vital that we teach our dog that, if he wants something from us, he cannot demand it, for example by pawing at us (in this case we ignore him). On the contrary, we will reward all those situations that we do like (when he stops barking, when he is lying down calmly, etc.).
8. Canine communication: learning to interpret the main signals that dogs use to communicate with each other can help us to better understand how our new friend is feeling, and we can even use them with them: yawning, turning their heads, turning their backs (these are the so-called "calm signals").

1. In order for the new cat to adapt more easily to our home, the first few days should be spent in a quiet, quiet room with all the essential elements. Make sure that there is no hole in the room where the cat can get in and that it is difficult to get it out. The litter box should be placed as far away as possible from water and food. This will create a place where it is always safe and comfortable. When we consider that the animal is already integrated into this environment, we will let it explore the rest of the house.
2. A litter box with clean litter should always be available. Sometimes it is necessary to find another location for the litter box because the cat does not find the place we have chosen to be suitable. The ideal place is a quiet place with little traffic, such as the bathroom of the house. If there are several cats in the same household, it may be advisable to place more than one litter tray.
3. Cats will self-administer the amount of food they eat. Care should only be taken with the amount of food if the animal starts to put on weight. Then it is necessary to rationalise and feed them low-calorie food. In the pet food market there is a wide range of foods depending on the age of the cat or the physiological characteristics or illnesses it may suffer from. In the latter cases it is advisable to have a vet prescribe it. It is best for their health that they always eat dry food and reserve wet food for exceptional cases. Water should be changed daily for clean, fresh water.
4. A high, sturdy scratching post should be placed where the cat can sharpen its claws. It is advisable to place it in the place where it has the most social life with humans and other animals, usually the living room and kitchen.
5. Cats prefer to be at a certain height. They should be able to climb on shelves or shelves at different heights. If there are dogs in the home, their food and water bowl should also be placed high up.
6. Care should be taken to ensure that windows are not left open. Cats are very curious and will try to investigate, so they may fall out. Windows can be left open if a screen, mosquito net, lattice or similar is put in place.
7. It is important to look at the cat's coat. It indicates the good health of the animal. They clean and groom themselves every day. If the cat's coat is dirty or dandruffy, a vet should be consulted. They can be brushed once a week to remove dead hair and prevent hairballs from forming. If they have long hair, knots can form, so it is advisable to brush them much more often. You can also give them malt several times a week to help them digest the hairballs. It is advisable to brush them from the time they are small so that they become accustomed to these manipulations.
8. Cats are very sensitive to draughts, so such situations should be avoided. They catch colds quite easily.
9. Play is especially important for cats as it allows them to develop their hunting skills. They should never play with our hands, but always with toys, and not necessarily purchased ones. They like small objects, which resemble small mice or birds, and light objects because they love to flip them in the air, kick them with their paws and chase them.
